So i have ideas about what happened, but i wanted to see what you all thought.
I was shooting with my ruger 10/22 with winchester whitebox bulk ammo. I had been having some problems with misfires (about 3 in every 100) and i was attributing that to the ammo as my gun has never had this problem with other ammo.
On one such light strike, i rotated the round to a new position on its rim, (what i had been doing with the rest of the misfires) so that i could still use the round. When i squeezed the trigger, the report from the rifle was much louder than usual, and i felt a shockwave hit me. Overall, the recoil was the same, but there was still the shockwave.
It was the last round in the mag, so i safety checked the rifle, and dropped my mag free. I then realized that i had black stains on my left hand from debri blowing out of the magwell at the time of the shot. (my support hand was covering the magwell) As it was the last round and i had to fiddle with it, i know that it was securely seated in the chamber at the time of discharge.
I looked the gun over for damage, and when i didn't find any apparent problems, i checked for a squib load. When i ruled that out, i loaded another magazine, and fired all ten from the hip. The gun worked flawlessly and has ever since. I looked for the brass, but as i was shooting in a field with lots of leaves, i never located the double struck casing.
I have never seen or felt anything like this with many thousands of rounds through the gun. I usually use federal bulk ammo and i will be returning to it as soon asap. If you know what happened or think you know, please let me know. I have my theories, but there has to be someone out there who can tell me more about this.
